Something you don’t often see on a modern house is a thatched roof, but that’s exactly what Ukrainian architect Sergey Makhno added when he was renovating a house for himself.
Sergey explains that the house is “built in contemporary Ukrainian style under the influence of Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi that finds beauty and harmony in imperfections.”
The house, located in the suburbs of Kyiv, has a thatched roof that hangs over the wood siding on the exterior of the house.
Drawing inspiration from traditional thatched roofs found throughout Ukrainian farms and villages, the contemporary thatched roof purposefully shaped to follow the lines of the windows. This results in a unique appearance for the house that draws the eye upwards to the roof.
