Architect Pia Mendaro was asked by her friend to help her convert a warehouse space in Madrid into an open plan living space, however this also needed to include a bedroom.
Pia explains, “we thought of making a wheeled bed, a cabin, a box with windows … until we decided to detach ourselves from the ground.”
This is when they came up with the idea to hang the bedroom from the gabled ceiling and one of the steel rafters.
Working together with fellow architect Manuel Ocaña, a lightweight, semi-hanging platform bed was built using 20mm steel rounds working on compression and suspension, and 8mm corrugated rods in tension.
A set of movable stairs created an easy way for people to reach the platform, while also being able to be used throughout the interior when needed to reach high places.
Adjacent to the bed are a few more stairs that lead up to an outdoor space.
