Marc Koehler Architects designed a staircase with a built-in bookshelf for a home in Amsterdam.
The architect’s description
The staircase is a multifunctional design for a house in Amsterdam. The clients wish to connect two floors without loosing the book-storing capability of the cupboard which currently occupies the space. By treating a staircase as a furniture element, a flexible object is created, redefining the role of the staircase in the house.
Several material and structural variants have been developed to fulfill the client’s wishes. In the end wood was chosen as the primary material, due to the extraordinary short construction time requested by the client.
